 Pune, city, is the eighth largest metropolis in Indian located in west-central Maharashtra state, at the junction of the Mula and Mutha rivers. Also called “Queen of the Deccan. It is the second largest city after Mumbai in Maharashtra. The city leads as the ‘veritable heartland’ of cultural Maharashtra with the presence of the numerous edifices in Pune linked to its rich and glorious past.
A city surrounded by a vast network of industrial suburbs with large factories producing a wide variety of products are distributed in Mumbai, Ahmadnagar, Solapur, and Satara. The old city is largely residential and commercial and is served by large-scale commuter transport. In 1961 the Panshet Dam collapsed, washing away a substantial part of the old town. It was the seasonal capital of the Bombay Presidency and is now a popular tourist resort, offering cool weather, historic and religious monuments, museums, parks, hotels, and cultural attractions. 
Pune is the cultural capital of the Maratha people. The city first gained importance as the capital of the Bhosle Marathas Empire in the 17th century. The Mughals temporarily captured it but it again served as the official Maratha capital from 1714 until it fell to the British in 1817. The battle of 1817 between Marathas and the British East India Company laid the foundation for the establishment of Pune Cantonment. Being the strategic military hub of many defense establishments, training centers, and research and technological innovation facilities and laboratories. This military cantonment serves as a headquarters for the Indian Army’s Southern Command.
Pune has long been a major educational and cultural centre winning the title to it as the “Oxford and Cambridge of India.” The city houses some 17+ universities including universities with a history dating back to – Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute (1821); Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth (1921) University of Pune (1948) etc. The city is home to several renowned research institutes like DRDO, the National Chemical Laboratory, the Agharkar Research Institute, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics to name a few.  The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (1917) is renowned for research and instruction in the Sanskrit and Prakrit languages and has more than 20,000 ancient manuscripts.
